Famous Quotes
of
Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright was the greatest of all American architects.   He was indeed an American genius. Over the course of his long career, he designed over eight hundred buildings from insitutional, commerical to residental.   He was also outspoken and here are a few of his famous quotes.

A doctor can bury his mistakes but an architect can only advise his clients to plant vines.

An architect's most useful tools are an eraser at the drafting board, and a wrecking bar at the site.

Early in life I had to choose between honest arrogance and hypocritical humility. I chose the former and have seen no reason to change.

Eventually, I think Chicago will be the most beautiful great city left in the world.

Every great architect is - necessarily - a great poet. He must be a great original interpreter of his time, his day, his age.

Form follows function - that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.

Harvard takes perfectly good plums as students, and turns them into prunes.

No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other.

Comment:   With the above quote, one wonders if he was thinking of Falling Waters

A free America... means just this: individual freedom for all, rich or poor, or else this system of government we call democracy is only an expedient to enslave man to the machine and make him like it.

Frank Lloyd Wright

As one schooled in architecture, I always found the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright something to be sought. It was always a delight to find a relatively unknown building, one that received little to no publicity and perhaps really rather insufficient.   Such were finds in San Francisco on Maiden Lane and residences in many American cities.   But a visit to Falling Waters will cause the visitor to wonder at the beauty of the building and the setting.
